The Life of a Showgirl is officially upon us, which means Taylor Swift is outside and gushing all about her latest body of work. On October 6, the Grammy winner paid a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she discussed the album, her bestie Selena Gomez’s wedding, and her engagement to Travis Kelce.
Of course, Travis served as Taylor’s muse across several tracks on TLOAS…including her NSFW track, “Wood,” inspired by his manhood. During a segment on The Tonight Show, Taylor explained the inspiration and meanings behind some of her songs. She revealed that the raunchy track actually had humble and “innocent” beginnings when she laid it down in the studio with producers Max Martin and Shellback.
“I brought this into the studio and I was like, ‘I wanna do sort of like a throwback kind of timeless-sounding song,’” she explained to host Jimmy Fallon, adding, “And I had this idea about, ‘I ain’t gotta knock on wood,’ and I would knock on wood and it would be all these superstitions. And it really started out in a very innocent place.”
“The Fate of Ophelia” artist blushed as she admitted, “I don’t know what happened, man. I got in there, we started vibing and I don’t know, I don’t know how we got here. But I love the song so much.”
A few days before her Tonight Show appearance, Tay revealed that the real meaning behind the track completely went over her mom, Andrea Swift’s, head.
“I think that she thinks that that song is about superstitions, popular superstitions, which, which it absolutely is,” Taylor said during SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up radio show.
“That’s the joy of the double entendre,” she said. “That song, you could read that song for people and it just goes right over their head. That song…you see in that song what you wanna see in that song.”
